1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains how Japanigo: Learn Japanese ("the App") handles your information. Japanigo: Learn Japanese is a Japanese language learning application developed by Umit UZ with lessons, vocabulary, kanji, flashcards, pronunciation practice, and an AI study assistant.

Japanigo is designed with privacy as a core principle. Your lessons, progress, and practice history stay on your device. The App does not require an account. Pronunciation practice uses Apple speech recognition, and the optional AI assistant uses a Groq API key you provide yourself (described below).

2. Information We Collect

Japanigo does not collect personal information on remote servers. Your learning data — lessons, vocabulary, flashcards, streaks, and practice history — is stored locally on your device. Audio for pronunciation practice is processed by Apple's speech recognition, and AI chat messages are sent to Groq only when you use the AI assistant (described below).

2.1 Locally Stored Data

The following data is stored exclusively on your device:

  • Learning progress: Completed lessons, vocabulary, kanji, hiragana / katakana mastery, flashcards, and proficiency ratings
  • Practice history: Quiz results, pronunciation (speech) session records, and XP / streak / achievement progress
  • AI key & preferences: The Groq API key you choose to enter (stored locally on your device), plus notification and display settings
  • Subscription status: Whether you have an active premium subscription (cached for offline access)

2.2 Keychain Storage

The Groq API key you enter for the AI assistant and your subscription status are stored locally on your device (the API key is never collected by the developer).

2.3 AI Assistant Messages

Japanigo's optional AI study assistant is powered by Groq, using a Groq API key that you enter yourself. When you send a message to the assistant, your chat text and a system prompt are sent to Groq over HTTPS to generate a reply. No other personal information is included. The key and your conversation history are stored locally on your device.

3. No Account or Login Required

Japanigo: Learn Japanese does not require an account, registration, or sign-in of any kind. All functionality is accessible immediately on launch without any credentials.

4. Third-Party Services

4.1 Groq AI (your key)

Japanigo's AI assistant uses Groq's API with a Groq API key you provide yourself. When you chat or request analysis, your message text is sent to Groq. The key is stored locally on your device and is not collected by the developer. Groq's handling of this data is governed by Groq's own privacy policy.

4.2 Apple Speech (SFSpeechRecognizer)

Pronunciation practice uses Apple's speech-recognition framework. Audio is processed to evaluate your pronunciation and is not stored or transmitted by Japanigo beyond the recognition request, which is governed by Apple's privacy policy and your device settings.

4.3 Apple StoreKit

Subscriptions are processed by Apple's StoreKit framework through the App Store. Japanigo does not handle or store payment information.

5. No Analytics or Tracking

Japanigo: Learn Japanese does not integrate any analytics SDKs, crash reporting tools, advertising identifiers (IDFA/IDFV), or third-party tracking of any kind. There are no cookies, beacons, or similar tracking mechanisms.

6. Internet Usage

Japanigo: Learn Japanese requires an internet connection only for:

  • AI assistant chat and analysis via Groq (only when you use it, using your own API key)
  • Apple speech recognition for pronunciation practice (may use the network depending on your device)
  • Subscription validation via Apple StoreKit (when purchasing or restoring)
  • Opening external links (privacy policy, terms, support)

Core lessons, vocabulary, flashcards, quizzes, and progress work fully offline. The AI assistant, online speech recognition, and subscription purchases require an internet connection.

7. Speech Recognition & Microphone

Japanigo uses the microphone and Apple's speech recognition (SFSpeechRecognizer) so you can practice pronunciation and receive accuracy feedback. Audio is captured only during an active practice session you start. Depending on your device and settings, recognition may be performed on-device or by Apple's servers; Japanigo does not record, store, or transmit your audio beyond this recognition step. Permission is requested the first time you practice and can be withdrawn in iOS Settings.

8. Data Sharing

Japanigo: Learn Japanese does not sell, rent, share, or disclose any user data to third parties. Since no personal data is collected by the developer, there is nothing to share.

9. Children's Privacy

Japanigo: Learn Japanese is not directed at children under the age of 13. The App does not knowingly collect any personal information from children.

10. Data Retention and Deletion

You can reset your progress and clear your data (including the AI key) from within the App. Deleting the App removes all locally stored data.

11. Changes to This Policy

If this Privacy Policy is updated, the revised version will be posted at this URL with an updated effective date.
